New Phone for Christmas? 5 Steps to Set It Up for the Car Before the First Drive

The best time to set up a new phone for the car is in the driveway, before the first trip. On an iPhone, turn on Driving Focus in Settings > Focus and pick when it starts. Then mount the phone, plug it in, and start your route while you're still parked.

Android owners can follow the same plan using the driving settings for their phone. Here's how to do each step.

Why set up a new phone before the first drive?

A new phone starts fresh. Your old notification choices, car connection and map settings often don't come along.

That means the first drive is when surprises show up: a group chat that won't stop buzzing, a phone with no spot to sit, or a route you never entered. A few quiet minutes in park fixes all three.

Step 1: How do you turn on Driving Focus on a new iPhone?

Apple's help page says Driving Focus works with iOS 15 and later, and that when it's on, "text messages and other notifications are silenced or limited" (Apple Support).

To set it up, Apple lists these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app and tap Focus.
  2. Tap the Add button, then tap Driving.
  3. Tap Customize Focus.
  4. Follow the onscreen steps to choose which notifications get through.

Apple's iPhone User Guide adds that if Driving already shows up under Focus, you can just tap it (Apple iPhone User Guide).

Step 2: How do you make Driving Focus turn on by itself?

Apple says to go to Settings > Focus > Driving, then tap While Driving under Turn On Automatically. The choices Apple lists are:

  • Automatically: turns on based on detected motion.
  • When Connected to Car Bluetooth: turns on when your iPhone connects to car Bluetooth devices.
  • Manually: you turn it on from Control Center.

There's also an Activate With CarPlay option, which turns Driving on when your iPhone connects to CarPlay (Apple Support).

If you pick Manually, Apple says to open Control Center, touch and hold Focus, then tap Driving. Do this before you pull out.

Step 3: What do friends see when Driving Focus is on?

According to Apple, a Driving icon appears in the status bar and on the Lock Screen. Your status also shows in the Messages app, so people who text you see that you've silenced notifications. They can still notify you if something is urgent (Apple Support).

The iPhone User Guide also covers Auto-Reply. You choose which people get an automatic reply when they try to reach you, and you can edit the message to sound like you (Apple iPhone User Guide).

What about Android driving mode?

Android phones come from many makers, and driving settings can look different from one phone to the next. The most reliable guide is the official help center from Google or from your phone's maker, matched to your model and software version.

Use the same game plan as the iPhone steps: decide which notifications get through, decide whether the setting starts on its own, and test it in the driveway before your first real trip.

Step 4: Where should the new phone sit before you shift out of park?

A phone on the passenger seat or in a cup holder slides around and ends up out of view. Give it a fixed spot where you can see the map at a glance.

The Cell Phone Seat is a cup holder phone mount that fits all phones, including future phones, vertically or horizontally, with or without a case. So a new phone in a new case works the same as the old one did. Check your vehicle with the fit checker first.

Once the phone is seated, plug in your charging cable and make sure it reaches without pulling.

Step 5: Why set the route before the car moves?

Typing an address is a parked-car job. Before you shift out of park:

  • Enter your destination and pick the route.
  • Turn up the navigation voice so you can hear turns without looking.
  • Start navigation and confirm the map is showing on screen.
  • Check that Driving Focus is on.

If plans change mid-trip, find a safe place to park first, then update the route.

FAQ

Does iPhone Driving Focus turn on by itself?

It can. Apple lists options to turn it on based on detected motion, when connected to car Bluetooth, or with CarPlay. You can also choose Manually and turn it on from Control Center.

Can people still reach me when Driving Focus is on?

Apple says people who message you see that you've silenced notifications, but they can still notify you if something is urgent. You can also set an Auto-Reply for chosen contacts.

Where do I find driving mode on Android?

Check the official help center from Google or your phone's maker for your exact model and software version, since settings can differ between phones.

Will my new phone fit in a thick case?

The Cell Phone Seat fits all phones, with or without a case. The largest phones in thick cases fit horizontally. If it's too snug in your cup holder, soften the base in hot water following the included instructions. If it's too loose, email info@cellphoneseat.com for a free foam kit.
